One of The Critters Got Loose
This sound art work was started upon waking this morning. While in the porch waiting to use the facilities, a critter was spotted scaling a large plastic terrain. The critter got out of sight, and as the artist was editing this piece, he felt a critter crawling on his foot. He shook it loose, and captured the critter under a cargo bay container lid. Attempting to place the critter into a long term storage container for ejection into outer space, the critter got loose.

The Spider Crawled Across The Freeway
This sound art piece is influenced by many factors. A modified instrument sets the acoustic mood for the entire piece, but has other influential factors. The modified instrument is an acoustic cymbal on a spindle with thread running down from the spindle at the center of the cymbal down the outer circumference edge of the cymbal. A paintbrush is gently bounced and slid on the string to create a subtle resonant cymbal sound. The modified instrument sound is predominant in the beginning of the piece, and sounds like a bird or toy squeaking.

The modified instrument resembles a Chinese Er Hu, but it has only one string as opposed to two. The modified instrument was sub-consciously inspired by an instrument created and performed by William Close on the show America's Got Talent, in which he turned the entire auditorium into a stringed instrument.

Another factor that set the mood for the song is the freeway also known as a highway or expressway. The modified instrument sound was recorded in the backroom closest to US Interstate Highway I65. The vehicular traffic of all shapes and sizes can be heard if you listen carefully in the background. This ambient background sound was digitally spliced and looped at various parts in the background analogous to a laugh track composed by Charles "Charley" Douglass back in the 60s -- the 1960s.

The modified instrument sound recording was looped and layered with the other digital and acoustic sounds, the ending acoustic drum recording, and the lead digitally synthesized flute instrument heard in this piece. The flute melody is symbolic of the gentility of the physical nature of an insect.

Near the end of this piece, the saying, the spider crawled across the freeway, is looped in two languages -- Swedish and Chinese. These two languages were chosen for various reasons. The biggest factor was the tonal quality of the sayings, which are melodic and fit this piece. The artist has symptoms of echolalia, and the repetition of certain words, phrases, and sounds by the artist affected his reasoning also. Lastly, the artist is fascinated by stories and general knowledge about Switzerland, and he has a fondness and admiration for Chinese people, language and culture.

The basement studio where the piece was edited is heavily saturated with spiders. Many are harvested and housed in mini domiciles for safe removal later. While editing this piece, a spider gently floated down directly in front of the laptop computer machine screen as if listening to the music being played. The editor quickly scatted and returned with a container and a light, and placed the spider into his own cozy container domicile -- he or she still waits for his or her own safe place in space.

The idea of a tiny delicate spider crawling across a rough dangerous freeway is the feeling and story being conveyed in this piece.

Nampod Track 01, Al Corralez Ramblings with Background Music While in Vietnam 2011
This sound art entry is composed in a 'podcast' fashion and resembles something inspired by an NPR audio story. This is one of about a dozen tracks composed near the end of his stay in Vietnam 2011. Al's vocals were recorded by himself in his room in Thu Duc Vietnam. He added original music compositions and other editing sound art components also in his room in Thu Duc Vietnam using GarageBand on a Mac. Seven of the tracks were burned to a CD luckily as a backup before his Mac became inoperable. The CD was then ripped and volumes slightly adjusted before posting here. You can hear the dropouts and some skips from the CD.

The artist was inspired to create this sound art work after listening to and enjoying The Marc Maron Show podcasts.

Sitting at the terminal -- terminally insane.
Typing into a machine that has no brain.
We are all machines -- chemical, biological, conscious machines.
The immortal machine made from silicon will only live on with the consciousness of a mortal being.
You would have to be insane to think you can make a mechanical soul. What do you think?
